Saab 9-3 may return next summer

The buyer of the bankrupt Swedish automaker Saab is considering a relaunch of a popular conventional engine model ahead of the launch of its planned electric car.

National Electric Vehicle Sweden, which bought the Saab assets earlier this year, plans to launch its first electric car in 2014. But on Tuesday NEVS spokesperson Mikael Östlund said they were evaluating the possibility of relaunching the Saab 9-3 gas-powered model.

“If it is possible for the suppliers to deliver parts that allow production to begin next summer of the existing 9-3 with a traditional powertrain, we think there is a market for it”, Östlund told Reuters.

He said production of a conventional 9-3 would not affect plans for the launch of a 9-3 with an electric engine.
