Mobile internet doubled this year: Ericsson report

The amount of data used by mobile devices around the world has doubled over the past year. In a new report Wednesday, Sweden’s Ericsson attributes the increase to growth in video streaming services.

Ericsson says data traffic doubled in the third quarter of this year on an annual basis, and rose 16 percent from the previous quarter. The trend is set to continue, with information via mobile networks expected to double every year for the next six years.

Computers and tablets currently dominate mobile traffic, but Ericsson says the high growth in smartphones means data use will be split equally between the two in 2018.

The report also notes that free game apps that are financed by advertising often leads to significantly higher date consumption than the paid for versions of the software.
