Swedish and British researchers report that criminal behavior in adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) drops sharply when they take medication to help control their impulses.

Earlier studies have found that up to two-thirds of young offenders and half the adult prison population have ADHD. The study by researchers at Stockholm’s Karolinska Institute and Oxford University in Britain looked at 25,000 people with ADHD. It found that the number of crimes committed was about one-third lower among those taking medication.

The study is published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
