Big pump order after Hurricane Sandy

Just as the economic crisis was about to hit a group of Swedish workers, Hurricane Sandy has made sure they still have their jobs.

This week workers at Xylem Water Solutions in Emmaboda in southern Sweden were scheduled for cutbacks in their working hours, because of less demand from customers in Spain and Italy for the company’s water pumps.

Instead the company has added a night shift and asked people to work overtime. The reason: an order for 250 pumps for New York and New Jersey to help clean up after the flooding from Hurricane Sandy.

The company says its first analysis is that half the existing pumps in the affected area will have to be replaced.
