A Christmas ham shortage may hit consumers

"The problem is the price"

It seems like every year before Christmas we hear about ham shortages, rising prices, and struggling pig farmers. But is the ham shortage before Christmas just a ploy to sell more pork?

Swedish pig farmers say they will slaughter 10 percent fewer pigs compared to a year ago. The industry says cheaper meat from abroad and high feed prices are crushing farmers.

“The profitability for the farmers has been extremely bad for the past three years and we’re now seeing the results of that in Sweden,” says Maria Forshufvud, the head of the branch organization Swedish meat, who represents the Swedish meat industry.
