State-owned LKAB accused of illegal mining

The state-owned mining company LKAB has been reported to the police for alleged illegal mining in the northern village of Svappavaara.

“We hope that being reported will help to clarify what happened,” a spokesperson for the company told news agency TT.

Norrbotten county board accuses the company of mining in the area during 2011 and 2012 despite having its environmental permits withhdrawn.

The county reported the suspected crime when it was criticized by Sweden’s Parliamentary Ombudsman for not having stopped the mining operation.

However the mine is back in operation since the end of 2012 when it obtained a new permit from the environmental court.
