Sweden’s Johan Olsson has won the 50 kilometres world championship at the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in Val di fiemme.

It was the first time since 1993 that Sweden has won.

The 32 year old Swede took the lead just 10 kilometres into the grueling race. One of his Norwegian competitors, Petter Northug paid tribute to the performance.

“It was an impressive race,” he told Swedish Radio. “I’ve a lot of respect for what Johan did today. You have to be strong mentally and in good shape. It was a well-earned gold for Sweden.
