Tanning salons protest "ignorant" regulations

Solarium companies in Sweden have appealed against new safety regulations for sunbeds introduced last month, reports Swedish Radio. The companies argue that there isn’t enough time to make the changes.

Since last month, all solariums in Sweden must follow a new European product safety standards rule. This means that older existing salons need to replace their sunbeds immediately, while tanning beds at newer salons need to be replaced before 2015.

The Swedish Tanning Association has appealed to the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority and writes that authority's impact assessment, especially regarding economic losses, is flawed and shows a great lack of knowledge about the industry.

A total of nearly 300 tanning businesses have recently appealed the decision and requested an exemption from the rules, but all have been rejected.
