Skier dies after being dug up from Åre avalanche

The skier who went missing after a large avalanche broke out at lunch time Friday in Åre, Jämtland province, has died, according to local police. The man was rushed to hospital with serious injuries after being dug out of the snow by a local rescue mission, reports news agency TT.

"He was buried in the snow for about three hours before he was found deeply chilled. CPR was started on site but the man's life could not be saved," the Jämtland police wrote on their website.

The avalanche broke out at lunchtime on Friday. Local rescue services had been searching the area with avalanche dogs from Norway and Västerbotten province.
