Racist e-mail lecturer forgiven by party

A Lecturer who sent a racist e-mail to a prospective student inquiring about a course at the University of Dalarna has kept his position as a local councillor representing the Centre Party in Rättvik.

The Centre Party in Rättvik called a crisis meeting after the e-mail became known but at its annual meeting last week, Hans-Erik Hellborg was again elected to sit on the party board.

"He is deeply remorseful," says Centre politician Anna-Maja Roos to news agency TT.

Last month, Mehran Mahmoudi sent an e-mail to the lecturer and politician asking for information about registering for a course but instead received a strange reply: "Can you help Mohammed - he seems to have come straight from Mecca".

The 23-year-old student said he was " shocked and disappointed" by the e-mail. Hans-Erik Hellborg, who had hit the reply button instead of forwarding the mail to a colleague, said his message had been "a joke gone wrong".
