Family background key to school success

Sweden is spending more money than ever before on education, but increased funding has not resulted in better academic performance.

The main explanation for falling results is social segregation, according to an analysis by the daily newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

The analysis suggests that neither increased funds, smaller classes, or better qualified teachers have had a significant effect in halting the negative trend.

Two factors which strongly effect student performane were found to be the level of unemployment in a community, and the proportion of parents with advanced education.
