Man from Sweden gets nine years for terrorism

A court in New York has sentenced a 38-year-old resident of Sweden to a nine year prison term for terrorism. The man admittted last June that he had contacts in Somalia with al Shabaab, an organization designated as a terrorist organization by the USA. The man's lawyer maintains that his client was pressured into confessing.

According to the American court documents, the 38-year-old left his home in Sweden in early 1999 and traveled to Somalia in order to support and receive military-type training from al Shabaab. While in Somalia, the man allegedly contributed 3,000 Euros to al Shabaab, received training and instruction in bomb-making and bomb-detonation, and purchased an AK-47 rifle, additional magazines, and two grenades. The weapons and ammunition were subsequently turned over to an al Shabaab military commander.

The 38-year-old holds Ethiopian citizenship acccording to the Swedish Foreign Ministry, but the American prosecutor considers him to be from Eritrea.
