Just completed Afghan base being torn down

The newspaper Dagens Nyheter reports that as soon as Sweden’s new base in northern Afghanistan, Forward Operation Base Monitor, was completed recently, a crew arrived to start tearing it down.

The project to build the camp began in 2010, when, the newspaper says, it was believed Swedish participation in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan would last until 2025. But Sweden is already withdrawing forces from Afghanistan, with a complete withdrawal by next year. Forward Operation Base Monitor is due to close in just over two weeks, on April 15.

Dagens Nyheter says the base, which was officially inaugurated by King Carl Gustaf in 2011, cost around SEK 270 million to build.
