Proposal to ban begging in Sweden

A leading member of the conservative Moderate Party is calling for the outlawing of begging here.

Eva Solberg, president of the organization of conservative Moderate Women in Stockholm, writes in the newspaper Dagens Nyheter Saturday that begging on the city’s streets has increased over the past six months.

She believes the begging is organized, and says a ban would send a signal to the beggars’ home countries that begging is not humane and cannot be accepted by society.

Eva Solberg writes in the same newspaper that recently presented a series of reports on Roma beggars in Sweden, visiting the extreme poverty of their home villages in Romania, and confirming the stories of those who say they are collecting money for disabled children unable to receive help there.
