"Older men should use women's bikes"

Experts are recommending that older men use women’s bicycles when cycling. They say older men are injuring themselves on the top bar.

The advice from the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute comes after it found that four out of ten injuries or deaths in accidents involving a single bicycle by itself are of people over the age of 65.

During the period between 2007 and 2011 there were 125 fatalities and 1274 serious injuries in single bicycle accidents. More than 40 percent of those involved were 65 or older. The institute says hip injuries are common, and that there were 119 injuries when people got on or off a bicycle.

The institute’s Anna Niska tells the TT news agency that the men involved have trouble getting across the top bar in a men’s bike, and she suggests they switch to women’s models. However, she adds that it is healthier for older people to bicycle than to do not so.
