Labor standoff could lead to strike Tuesday

Construction workers may strike if their labor union, Byggnads, and the employers organization, Sveriges Byggindustrier, cannot reach an agreement Monday.

The mediators have presented a final offer, and both sides had until 2 p.m. to decide whether or not they wanted to accept it. However, discussions were still going on into the early evening, according to Matilda Ström, press secretary of Byggnads.

If no agreement is made, some 3,000 construction workers at around 160 sites may strike beginning on Tuesday.

One of the key sticking points concerns who should be responsible for enforcing the collective agreement. The labor union demands that head contractors bear responsibility for making sure subcontractors follow the rules of the collective agreement and pay the salaries in line with it. However, the employers organization maintains that would put a stop to foreign labor.
