Reinfeldt: Thatcher affected Swedish politics

Sweden's prime minister says that Margaret Thatcher's possibly most significant legacy is the creation of New Labour, which also influenced his centre-right Moderate Party.

Speaking to news agency TT Fredrik Reinfeldt says that Tony Blair's centre-left New Labour party accepted many of the changes Thatcher brought in: "And I would say this has in its turn affected both the creation of the New Moderates and also the way some of the Swedish Social Democrats think."

Reinfeldt says that Thatcher was "an ideologue among pragmatists" adding that although he prefers pragmatic politics he was impressed by her strength, her convictions and her command of facts.

Gudrun Schyman, former leader of the Left Party and now spokeswoman for the Feminist Initiative party, says that Thatcher's time in politics showed that a woman could be just as strong a leader, "she showed in a very good way that there is not such a big difference between women and men."
