Swedish diplomat to return to Minsk

Sweden is to send a chargé d'affaires to its embassy in Belarus, in a sign icy relations between the two countries may be thawing.

"After some difficulties, we will soon send a charge (d'affaires) back to run our embassy in Minsk in Belarus. Good for everyone," Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt wrote on his Twitter account Tuesday.

The Swedish ambassador and other Swedish diplomats were expelled from Minsk last year, accused of having close links to the country's pro-democracy opposition.

The Swedish government responded by asking two Belarusian diplomats to leave the country and refusing to accredit their new ambassador to Sweden.

The decision to send a chargé d'affaires back to Minsk was announced by Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt on Twitter. He said the move was "good for everyone".
