SEK 14 million for burning down school

Gothenburg District Court has sentenced three young men to pay SEK 14 million in damages for burning down a school.

Aged today 20, 21, and 23, the three set fire to a car outside the Torslandskola in Hisingen, outside Gothenburg, in November 2009. When the car rolled into the school, it too caught fire and burned to the ground.

In 2010 the three were convicted for setting fire to the car, but not for the destruction caused to the school, which the court at the time ruled was unintentional.

In setting the damages Tuesday, the district court said that the SEK 100 million demanded by the municipal insurance company Göta Lejon was “unreasonably burdensome” for the three young men.
