Lund residents advised to continue boiling drinking water

Residents of the southern city of Lund are still advised to boil their drinking water, as coliform bacteria remains in the water system.

According to a post made Wednesday afternoon on the website of VA Syd, which supplies the city with fresh water, preliminary samples are still turning up bacteria in the water, even though the levels of bacteria have been reduced.

The water systems are being flushed, and the reservoir has been emptied and cleaned, however, residents of Lund, Stångby, Odarslöv, Hardeberga, Flyingeby, and Södra Sandby, are still advised to boil the water they drink.

News agency TT reports that new test results will be ready on Thursday.

Coliform bacteria are not likely to cause illness, but their presence in drinking water can mean pathogens could be in the water system.

The first indications of bacteria in the water came at the end of last week, and those indications were confirmed on Tuesday. About 80,000 people are affected.
