Swede sentenced to death in Malaysia

A Swede has been sentenced to death in Malaysia for drug smuggling.

According to the newspaper Aftonbladet, the man, who is in his 40’s, was arrested at Kuala Lumpur airport in December 2011 carrying more than 4 kilos of methamphetamine.

The Swedish Foreign Ministry tells Swedish Radio News that the embassy in Kuala Lumpur is hoping to meet the man to plan an appeal. The foreign ministry also has hopes that Malaysia will abolish capital punishment before the sentence can be carried out.

The foreign ministry says there hasn’t been an execution in the country since 2010. However, according to Amnesty International more than 60 people received death sentences in Malaysia last year.
