Investigation into Saudi affair leaks closed

Sweden's attorney general has closed the investigation into a suspected breach of secrecy at the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI) in connection with revelations of the Saudi weapons affair.

"It was not possible to get any clarity into who leaked these documents," attorney general Anna Skarhed told Swedish Radio.

About a year ago FOI turned to the attorney general to request and investigation into who had handed over the documents that Swedish Radio got hold of and published in connection with an investigative report which revealed that Sweden had secret plans to help Saudi Arabia build an advanced weapons factory.

FOI claimed some of the information in the documents was classified as secret and could not be revealed according to Swedish law.

Skarhed agrees despite having to close the preliminary investigation.

"If someone could have been tied to the leak a criminal prosecution would have been likely," said Skarhed.
