Key figure in Bofors scandal dead

Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, one of the central figures in the Bofors arms trading scandal of the 1980's, is dead at age 74

Allegations that bribes were paid by Swedish arms manufacturer Bofors, to secure a valuable military contract with India, caused a serious rift in relations between Sweden and India. Another consequence of the affair was the fall from power of then-prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

Allegations were made that bribes were paid to Quatttrocchi and other middlemen, to gain a large contract with the Indian Army for 155 mm artillery guns
