Baby elephant born at Kolmården

There was a new addition at Kolmården Zoo, west of Stockholm, during the weekend. Bua the elephant gave birth to a baby boy, who weighed in at 87 kilograms.

He’s the first elephant born at the park.

The dad is Raja, who lives at a zoo in England. He and Bua have never met, as the baby was conceived through artificial insemination, back in November 2011.

As Bua now takes up her future as a single mom, Kolmården officials say they haven’t picked a name for the new arrival yet. “This usually takes a little time,” says the park’s Frida Muistma. “We like to see what kind of characteristics they have first.”

In the meantime, the park’s elephant enclosure is being kept closed to give the new mommy and baby some quality time together.
