Mass crash investigation stalls

The investigation into January’s mass traffic accident outside Helsingborg has stalled, as three of the truck drivers suspected of involvement are apparently outside the country.

Thirty cars and some 40 larger vehicles were in the accident in the fog on the slippery Tranarps Bridge. One Lithuanian truck driver died in the mass collision, and around 50 people were taken to local hospitals.

Bertil Sjunnesson, who is in charge of the police investigation, tells the newspaper Sydsvenskan that three of the eight truck drivers suspected of being responsible are foreign citizens and cannot be located, and have not been questioned.

“We’ve asked for help from their home countries so we can proceed with the investigation,” he says. The case may be presented to prosecutors in the Fall.
