Agency tightens control of welfare fraud

Increased controls by the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Försäkringskassan) of the reimbursements paid for caregivers has led to the detection of widespread welfare fraud.

During the past four months the agency has demanded that SEK 34million be repaid, due to false claims. The agency conducts thousands of follow-up controls of caregiver and sick-leave payments each year.

In 2012, the agency demanded the repayment of some SEK 284million in false claims, according to newspaper Sydsvenskan.
