Police are to have a word with a circus in south-eastern Sweden that took its elephants to the beach over the weekend, Swedish Radio's local P4 Kalmar channel reports.

Beachgoers were surprised to see the two elephants wade into the Baltic at Köpingsvik on the island of Öland on Saturday, but police say the close encounter with the animals could have ended badly.

Although it is not illegal to take the elephants to the beach, it could have endangered other swimmers, and may have made the water dirty, the police told P4. They will now discuss the issue with the animals' owners.
