Celtic end Elfsborg's Champions League dreams

The long wait for a Swedish team to qualify for a place in the lucrative group stages of the Champions League goes on after Elfsborg were unable to overcome Glasgow Celtic at the Borås Arena in last night's Champions League third qualifying round second leg decider, going out 1-0 on aggregate.

Trailing 0-1 from the first leg in Glasgow, the match ended 0-0 with Elfsborg creating few chances to trouble Celtic goalkeeper Fraser Forster.

It's now 13 years since a Swedish side qualified for the group stages of the Champions league. Elfsborg now drop into the Europa League while Celtic are in Friday's draw for the Champions League play-off round.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon paid tribute to Elfsborg's fighting spirit but was less complimentary about their artificial pitch.

"That's the worst artificial pitch I've ever seen. It was difficult for the players to keep their balance," Lennon told BBC Sport.
