Alarming decline in dairy farming
The number of milk-producing dairies operating in Sweden is shrinking rapidly due to declining profitablity. There are now 75 percent fewer dairy farms in business than in 1990, and the number of milk-producing cows has been halved.
Lars Holm, who runs a farm in northern Sweden, gave up his milk dairy business at the end of last year.
"Prices fell so significantly that it felt meaningless to continue," he told Sweden Radio News.
In 1990 there were 527 dairy farms in Sweden, by 2006 the figure had dropped to 246 and by the end of last year, the figure stands at 132.
