Women at the mercy of violent men during summer holidays

Swedish women who are in need of protection from abusive boyfriends or husbands may receive little or no help from the authorities during the summer, when social workers and police take vacations. Cases of abuse pile-up for weeks during the vacation period, reports newspaper Dagens Nyheter.

Any person who is subject to psychological or physical abuse in a relationshiop can seek help at one of Sweden's women shelters, or reach a contact person at a municipality.

But during holiday season the wheels of bureacracy grind a little slower.

"There are problems at this time of year. Women can't get in touch with a lawyer, the police or a case worker. But these cases are as acute now as they are during the rest of the year. These men don't hit less in the summer," Cecilia Backman, manager of the women's shelter in Lund told Dagens Nyheter.
