Ten of eleven horse riding helmets unsafe

Ten out of eleven horse riding helmets tested by the Swedish Consumer Agency were found to offer inadequate protection.

"We were very surprised that the results of the test were so incredibly bad," test administrator Stina Johansson told Swedish Radio News.

The helmet's ability to withstand jolts, protection against penetration and the chin strap were all tested. Ten of the models for sale in Sweden were found to be unsafe in one or more of those functions. The two worst helmets were recalled by their distributors, and three others are not longer sold.

The saftey of horse riding safety gear is of importance, since half a million Swedes, including many children, ride regularly. Horse riding is one of the country's most popular sports for children and youth.
