Aregawi wins gold in Moscow

Sweden's Abeba Aregawi won gold this evening in the women's 1,500 metre final at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow.

After a slow start and with two laps left, Aregawi took up second place. With 300 metres to go, she sped up and ended up crossing the finish line at 4.02,69.

"I am so incredibly pleased and happy now. The last 200 metres went by very fast. There were some shoves and I looked at the big screen to see where the other girls were," Aregawi told Swedish Radio.

The 23-year-old Aregawi was born in Adegrat, Ethiopia and as the world's best 1,500 metre runner she represented Sweden's best chance of a gold medal in Moscow.
