Low interest in becoming science teacher

Just eight students have started university courses this year with the aim of becoming chemistry teachers, news agency TT reports.

Interest in becoming science teachers in the other disciplines is also small, just 28 have signed up to become physics teachers, and 42 want to become biology teachers.

800 students want to become English teachers.

Bertil Östberg, top civil servant at the education ministry, calls the situation "extremely worrying", but not new. He told news agency TT that Sweden has had similar problems recruiting science teachers for decades, but has still not managed to get more student teachers specialising in the sciences.
