Bomb squad disarming live grenade in Umeå
Police in Umeå have cordoned off the city centre since Sunday morning due to a hand grenade which was found on a central square. A bomb disposal unit from Stockholm has examined the device and judged that it is live. More than 15 buildings have been evacuated.
"Our technicians are getting ready to destroy it now," police spokesman John Forsberg told Swedish Radio.
Peter Ekman, who discovered the grenade in the northern Swedish city on Sunday morning, told TT that it had no pin.
Umeå police have warned the public to stay away from the city centre until the device has been detonated.
The Left Party leader Jonas Sjöstedt delivered his summer speech in Umeå's old town on Sunday afternoon. It is unclear whether the hand grenade could be linked to a threat to the party leader.
