Olympic committee says no to rainbow protest

No Swedish athlete will have rainbow-painted fingernails in the Winter Olympics in the Russian town of Sochi next year. That assurance comes from the head of the Swedish Olympic Committee, Stefan Lindberg.

"It may be to trivialise the issue, but just as you cannot walk around with advertising any way you want, you cannot walk around with political symbols. As an individual, you can have an opinion on how countries act, but we cannot use the sports arena to demonstrate those opinions," Lindberg tells the news agency TT.

If the Swedish high-jumper Emma Green Tregaro would have painted her nails in the colour of the rainbow in an Olympic competition, just like she did in the World Athletics Championships last week, she may be sent home from the games.

"People have suggested that the group should carry rainbow pins and stuff, but that sort of activity is completely out of the question," Lindberg says.
