Bildt: Strongest possible condemnation of Egyptian violence

EU foreign ministers have condemned the latest violence in Egypt, and decided to impose a weapons embargo on the country, but will not yet freeze development assistance, news agency TT reports.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt told Swedish media after a meeting that the condemnation was in the strongest possible terms.

"It's is clear that it is above all the developments since last Friday when the regime attacked with so much force," he said, "but this has also unleashed other violence against Coptic churches, against police and government institutions. It is an escalation of violence that we naturally forcefully condemn."

In a joint statement the foreign ministers say the EU will monitor the situation in Egypt closely and readjust development cooperation accordingly. It will also suspend export licenses to Egypt of any "equipment which might be used for internal repression".
