Forty Six dead as gang war esculates in Sweden

During the past 12 months, 46 people have lost their lives in a total of 214 shootings across Sweden, reports tabloid Aftonbladet.

"Overall, we have a situation when it comes to murder that we have never seen before," says Sven Alhbin, chief of police in Västra Götaland, told Aftonbladet.

According to the police, a large number of cases involve showdowns between criminals, while at the same time the easy availabilty of illegal weapons has exacerbated the problem.

"The market for illegal weapons is rather large. It is not especially difficult in those circles," says Lars Öjelind at national police headquarters to the tabloid.

Hardened criminals are said to be more trigger happy than ever before.

In Gothenburg alone this year, there have been 24 shootings, five of which have proved fatal.

The tabloid writes how in the early 1990s, weapons poured into Sweden from the former Soviet Union and the Balkans and shortly afterwards a big biker war broke out between the Hells Angels and Bandidos. Between the years 1991-97, a record number of gun crimes were reported in Sweden. Since then, it has been at a relatively low lowel, until now.
