Miners trapped below ground by fire

Twenty two workers at a mine outside of Skellefteå are trapped underground due to a fire. The blaze at Kristineberg mine near Mala in Lycksele is 1,000 metres underground, reports SVT television. According to police, two firefighters employed by the mine are amongst those trapped below.

"Some people have taken shelter in the security room, but we do not know yet how many people are safe. It is likely that at least one person is trapped by the fire,"  reports Tommy Nilsson, duty officer at the police in Västerbotten. He described the smoke as strong.

Emergency services are on site and are working to exstinguish the blaze. It is unclear why the fire started. The mine is the oldest in the Boliden area.
