Verdict due in Södertälje gang retrial"

The verdict will be announced at 2 pm this afternoon in the retrial against the so-called "Södertälje Network" gang. The 18 defendants are accused of three murders, along with several cases of extortion and kidnapping.

The first trial was the most costly court case in Swedish legal history and lasted six months at a cost of more than SEK 200 million. The Court of Appeals later ruled that one of the lay judges from the trial had a conflict of interest.

The leader of the alleged gang was sentenced to life imprisonment, while the other 17 defendants received shorter prison sentences.

Six of the defendants are behind bars. The other 12 have been released, as the time they had already served exceeded any sentences they might receive. The prosecutors say this is a concern because they fear witnesses might be intimidated.
