Life sentence upheld for organised gang leader

The leader of the organised crime gang "the Södertälje network" who successfully applied for a retrial after being found guilty of charges involving murder, kidnapping and extortion, has had his life sentence upheld.

In both trials, the defense had questioned the existence of the "Södertälje Network" gang, which is said to have terrorised local inhabitants. However on Thursday afternoon, the new set of judges at Södertälje district court held that the network did exist and that it had a clear leader.

In a statement, it wrote that the gang's main income came from illegal gambling, extortion or other illegal debt collection and had fought a turf war for control of gambling in Södertälje.
