Swedish Radio News reports that the defence forces may lose 1800 positions by 2019. There are currently around 33,000 military and civilian employees in the Swedish forces.

According to Lieutenant General Jan Salestrand “This doesn’t mean we will be closing units, but there will be reductions in a number of different units.”

The cutbacks result from a decision by the government this spring to reduce the military’s salaries by SEK 500 million by 2019. Since no regiments will be discontinued, Swedish Radio News says, individual regiments units may lose companies of 50 to 100 soldiers.
