Last departure from old Kiruna station

Just after 5:30 PM Saturday night, the last train left Kiruna’s railroad station. Traffic resumed immediately from a temporary station that is expected to be in service for several years.

The plan is to build a new Kiruna station, although the exact location is still uncertain. The local map is being transformed as the town center is being moved, to make room for an expansion of the mine that is the economic foundation of the community.

The old station has been in service for more than a century, but the local authorities have withdrawn monument protection, and the building is scheduled to be torn down.
