Eliasson wants to wait for inspectors' report

United Nations Deputy Secretary General Jan Eliasson says he still hopes for a political solution to the conflict in Syria.

In a lengthy interview with Swedish Radio News, the veteran Swedish diplomat declined to comment on American claims to have evidence that the Assad regime is behind poison gas attacks outside Damacus. Eliasson said he wants to wait for the results of the UN inspection team led by Sweden’s Åke Sellström.

Jan Eliasson says because of the split in the Security Council the Syria question has damaged the UN’s reputation more than any other issue in recent years.
