Ceremonies for new Swedes

The government is to require all municipalities to hold annual ceremonies to welcome new Swedish citizens, from the beginning of 2015. Today only around half of municipalities do this, usually on national day June 6.

SEK 5 million is to be allocated to municipalities to fund the ceremonies.

Integration Minister Erik Ullenhag tells Swedish Television News they will “promote a feeling of belonging and highlight the importance of Swedish citizenship” as well as promote integration.

The ceremonies do not involve the actual awarding of citizenship, but rather honor those who have become citizens during the previous calendar year. Attendance by the new citizens is voluntary.
