Super computer to bring better weather forecasts

New equipment and software updates promise to improve weather forecasts in Sweden, Dagens Nyheter newspaper reported Monday.

The Swedish weather service (SMHI) said a new supercomputer and weather-mapping models will provide more detailed and accurate forecasts as well as better capture local changes in the weather.

SMHI said the new forecast system will measure temperature, wind, precipitation, sunlight and use a supercomputer to crunch the data into more fine-tuned forecasts.

"With the new model we will have more detail than we have today, and thus we will be able to capture more of the variations in the weather," said Fredrik Linde, director of SMHI's forecasting and warning service.
