Gothenburg suburb shooting treated as attempted murder

Police were called to the Biskopsgården suburb in Gothenburg on Tuesday evening after several reports of gunshots there. The shots were reportedly aimed at a man and the police are treating the incident as attempted murder.

"Four people riding two mopeds reportedly entered the area and fired guns. We do not know exactly what happened but they likely shot into a building. What we do know at this point is that nobody was injured," Peter Adlersson of the regional Västra Götaland police told the local P4 Göteborg radio station on Tuesday evening.

A witness told local newspaper Göteborgs-Posten (GP) that he heard 10 to 15 shots.

Police cordoned off the area where the shooting occurred and launched a search for the gunmen. The man believed to be the target of the shooting was taken in for questioning.

Asked whether there is any connection to other recent shootings in the suburb, Adlersson said: "It is too early to say but it is likely. These shootings are happening in the same area."

Local residents told P4 Göteborg that they are very worried.

"It is really dangerous for the children and now everybody is thinking moving out of here. It's like living in a war zone," said one resident who did not wish to be named.

Two men in their thirties were arrested in Gothenburg over the weekend on suspicion of weapon crimes. One was detained and the other was released, though he is still a suspect.

It is unclear whether either of the two men were involved in any of the recent shootings in Biskopsgården, but they were arrested in the suburb on Saturday night.
