Åkesson not invited to Nobel ball

The leader of the xenophobic Sweden Democrats, Jimmie Åkesson, has once again not been invited to attend the Nobel Prize festivities in Stockholm next month, newspaper Svenska Dagbladet reports.

This is the fourth year in a row he has been left off the invitations list. He is the only parliamentary party leader not to have been invited to the celebrations.

Annika Pontikis from the Nobel Foundation, which administers the prize, says that the foundation's decision from 2010 not to invite the leader of the xenophobic party still stands, saying the decision fits with the spirit of Alfred Nobel's will, which urged the Nobel Prizes to be given "irrespective of nationality".

Linus Bylund, press secretary for the Sweden Democrat leader says that Åkesson is not upset by the decision.

"Jimmie isn't sitting at home crying because he can't go to a fancy party", he told SvD, "His attitude is that he'd rather do other things than mingle with the elite."
