King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia have performed a royal U-turn over not attending the 200th anniversary celebrations of Norwegian independence. The King and Queen had caused a stir in neighbouring Norway by turning down an invitation to attend Norwegian National Day on May 17.

However, on Thursday the Royal Court announced that Sweden's King and Queen would be present at the 200th anniversary event."The King does not visit other countries to participate in their national day so he will go on this evening as way of a special arrangement," said Annika Sönnerberg, acting manager of communications at the court, to news agency TT.
