Left party re-elects Sjöstedt
Sweden's Left Party has re-elected Jonas Sjöstedt as its leader at the party congress being held in Stockholm, on Saturday.
"Thanks for the confidence. I'm proud to be your leader. I promise to do everything to help us to succeed in this important election year, " said Sjöstedt.
Jonas Sjöstedt's position in the party appears to be very strong. According to Committee Chairman Elise Norberg Pilhem, there were no other party members nominated for the presidency.
Sjöstedt received a great deal of congressional support for the position ahead of elections in the Congress. But at a press conference after his re-election, he expressed concern over some congressional decisions.
"Most likely we will be the first parliamentary party that goes out with concrete reform proposals, which we hope to implement during the coming term. There are both benefits and risks with this," he said.
He said that on the plus side, he saw an opportunity to make an early impression that can affect the direction of the debate. "But it can also be a disadvantage if the debate is not operational yet," he said.
