Mars One Project

Reality show could make Swedes stars, on Mars

4:57 min

Several Swedes are in the running to join the mission of establishing the first human colony on Mars that would be financed by turning the outer space adventure into a global reality television series.

The Mars One project drew more than 200,000 applicants who would be selected to fly, one-way, to the Red Planet and set up a permanent colony.

Carl Nettelblad, a researcher at Uppsala University, is one of the 1,000 or so applicants that is heading on to the second round. He said he is excited about the project but aware of it's limitations.

"I'm not signing up for a suicide mission," Nettelblad said, "I'm signing up for a mission involving high risks but that's a far stretch from suicide."
